2014년, 자본주의와 코드들: 희망 공장
자본주의는 어떤 욕망도 자본이라는 기준으로 환원하고 그것의 증식을 위해 끊임없이 욕망을 재생산한다는 점에서 난해하다. 한편 많은 자본이 투입되는 건축의 본성상 자본의 증식에 대한 노골적인 욕구를 비난하기도 힘들다. 국가 기관은 이를 법으로 통제하는데 전국 어디에나 일괄적으로 적용되는 코드 외에도 지구단위계획이나 지역지구처럼 지엽적인 제어를 위한 수단도 있다. 반면 서로의 이익을 위해 자발적으로 규제하기도 하는데 대표적인 곳이 파주 출판단지다. 이곳은 같은 업종으로 입주자를 제한할 정도로 동질성이 극대화된 도시다. 자본주의에서 공간의 증식을 수단으로 하는 욕망은 동일하지만 서로 간의 규제를 통해 이를 조절한다. 마스터플랜이라는 새로운 코드의 출현이다.
파주2단계의 블록FB16에 있는 희망 공장은 공공의 이익을 위한 마스터플랜과 공장의 효율을 고려한 계획이 상충하는 지점에 있었다. 인쇄 공장으로서 작동하기 위한 최소한의 바닥 면적과 도로 전면에 있어야 할 마당의 위치를 고려하다 보면 마스터플랜과 어긋날 수밖에 없었다. 코디네이터, 블록 건축가와의 협의와 조합 심의를 통해 지엽적으로 조정하는 방법을 활용했다. 한편 샌드위치 패널 공장이 대세인 파주에서 공사비가 비싼 철근콘크리트 공장은 건축주가 어렵게 받아들인 결정이었다. 철근콘크리트를 적용하되 우리가 흔히 주변에서 사용하는 로테크(Low Technology)를 적용해 최대한 현대적인 효과를 도모하자고 설득했다. 유리알 같은 콘크리트 표면을 못 만들 바에야 갈아내고 보수를 필요로 하는 유로폼 노출보다는 아파트 측벽이나 토목 옹벽에 쓰는 다소 거친 문양 거푸집을 활용해서 노출콘크리트 자체로 마감했다.
Capitalism and codes: Heemang Factory, 2014
Capitalism is hard to comprehend, in that it returns all kinds of desires by the standard of capital and endlessly reproduces them for its proliferation. Meanwhile, it is difficult to blame a blatant desire for the increase in capital a lot of capital. Government controls it by regulations and there are not only nationwide codes but also peripheral control system like unit development planning and zoning district. On the other hand, regulation is voluntarily carried out for public interest and Paju Book City is an example. This is a city maximizing homogeneity using the increase of space as its means is all the same in capitalism, mutual regulation controls this. This is the emergence of new code, mater plan.
Heemang factory is Block FB 16 is the second stage of Paju Book City stands at the conflicting point of the master plan for public interest and the plan for efficiency of factory. Considering the minimum floor ratio area for a printing factory and the position of garden facing street, there was no choice but to violate a mater plan. Through the review with coordinators and an architect in charge of the block design, partial adjustment was applied to this project. On the other hand, considering the widespread use of sandwich panel for factory in Paju, it was a very difficult decision for the client to decide to choose reinforced concrete, which cost a lot in construction. I persuaded the client to promote modern effects as much as possible by applying frequently used low technology in spite of using reinforced concrete. If the concrete surface couldn’t be made like glass, the factory was finished by exposed concrete by form panel with a bit rough pattern used for sidewall of apartments and retaining wall rather than Euroform finishing which requires maintenance.
